21 metres in two hours!!

Yup. I bought 21 metres of fabric today in just under two hours of shopping at Abhakan Preston. I met up with RuthieK and we had a wonderful time. I am the queen of black and navy as regular readers may well have noticed. And Ruthie absolutely isn't. I really wanted to be more adventurous with colour and pattern and had asked for Ruthie's assistance since she is so good at that. And here is the photo that proves this, albeit on a smallish scale (well, as small a scale as one can be when one has purchased 21 metres of varied fabric in one store).
Top left working down:
cerise/black/grey knit with a sort of crysanthemum pattern. Its gorgeous. I insisted to Ruth that it was too mad for a knit dress... so I had the huge remnant cut and got 1.5 metres of it, got it home, draped it over me in the mirror... dratted thing really, really wants to be a knit dress and I really don't think I have bought enough fabric. Yes Ruth, if you are reading this, please feel free to laugh like a mad thing at me and say "I told you so" several times next week.
Black and cream poly knit print, almost like a mini giraffe skin print.
Black with purple and blue dotted abstracty but florally pattern knit.
Denim blue lightweight, super soft, super drapey knit
Bright, oh so very bright, cerise pink thin knit remnant. A very odd shaped piece, which I hope to be able to make into a polo/turtle neck top. I love this colour pink but its not showing in its full glory in the photo... this baby is bright. I have a purchased tee this colour and I've absolutely worn it to bits.
Silver crinkle/plisse poly. This was a gift from Ruthie. Thanks Ruth, it will be perfect for a BWOF top I wanted to make but couldn't find the fabric for.
Middle Row, working down.
Three washable suiting fabrics. They merge into a lump on the photo, but one is plain black lightweight with some stretch. One is a dark navy that is so dark its almost black, making it one of those fabrics that can possibly go with a navy or a black jacket. This one has a fine navy stripe and a self stripe that is shiny. Not explained well, but its a lovely piece. The third piece is black with a very fine and dark red pinstripe. I've found I wear my washable trousers more often than my wool ones which need to be handwashed, and I am always afraid to wear the nice wool ones in the rain in case they get mud splashed and the mud stains won't come out. So they lurk in the wardrobe whilst I wear the two washable pairs to shreds. So, I figured it would be better to make mainly washable trousers in future.
Light coloured, heavy weight, blue denim. This has a very good amount of stretch but when I measured it, its only forty inches wide!! Good job I bought a big piece of that one.
At the front is a lovely piece of green/teal merino wool suiting which Ruthie gave me. Thanks, its lovely. I've not decided what that wants to be yet though.
Right hand side row:
Cream liquid satin poly. This is a mid weight satin and is for lining my Marfy jacket. I've finally finished drafting linings and interfacing pieces in tissue, so the pattern is good to go now.
The middle piece is a poly georgette with large chocolate dots on. Each large dot has a teeny little closed up rose in the middle and is surrounded by a background pattern of teeny little chocolate dots. Its gorgeous. There is a huge amount, but its not all mine. Mum is having half of this piece, which I will cut in half once I've prewashed it.
At the front of the row is another poly georgette, this one is white with tiny navy polkadots.
Both georgettes are for making pussy cat bow blouses from Aug 09 Burda.
Not sure whether to be proud of my ability to purchase so much in so little time, or be embarrassed at adding so much fabric to my stash in one go.

Oh its all lovely!!! and some of it isn't even black :-)
I didn't realise we were supposed to measure how much we bought...... I will go and look at mine now.

I think you would wear a pink mad knit top a lot more than you would a pink mad knit dress. Make a dress in classic black or other dark neutral.

What fun you and Ruthie had and what great fabrics. The poly georgette with the brown polka dots and roses has got me curious, as it sounds like it might fit right into my wardrobe.

My sewing buddies and I did the same in Melbourne however, I don't think I bought 21 metres, but then I didn't measure it all, LOL.

I'm sure I've beaten that back in the day. I bought a LOT when I visited Giesse Scampoli in Birmingham. I don't remember the total but I do remember spending around £100 and since one of the fabrics was a beautful, fine, teal lambswool suiting at £6/m.... you'd get a lot for that!!

You sew such a lot, you'll get through that lot in no time. You NEED that much fabric. Really.

Cheers,
AJ
