Quilt Part Three - the top is pieced

Whew, I think this is the quickest quilt method/pattern I've ever used. I can't quite believe the top is completed already. I am not sure when I will get to the sandwiching and quilting of it but it won't be this week. On the left you can see how simple the block really is. Just four strips.

I have been chatting with RuthieK all week about styles and colours for garments and I think my desire to sew garments is slowly returning. I hope so anyway. My mind is starting to come up with ideas for patterns I might try next and slight changes to existing patterns to make them work a little better.
I have a reasonably large stash of Burda magazines and I would like to make some items from these, but I haven't yet worked out what my fitting alterations are in tops and dresses for Burda and this puts me off somewhat and is one of the reasons I stopped buying it every month. I've had some pretty big disasters with Burda tops and dresses even though I do always make a muslin or four. I just cannot seem to work out the fit, and I've certainly tried repeatedly. One thing that doesn't help is the lack of a bust point marking. It makes it difficult to work out where, and how much, to alter for length. I don't like to be beaten by things and I need to address this and am determined to have another try. I made the mistake of going onto the preview for next month's mag and there are several patterns I really like. In particular, there is a blouse with a tie collar and waist darts. I struggle with finding different styles of top to go under the kinds of fitted, lapeled jackets that I favour, and tend to fall back on that old favourite, the polo/turtle neck sweater but would love to branch out a little. I have seen a few Marfy jackets drawn with a tie collar blouse underneath. I've been keen to try one for a bit but I am concerned that it may be seen by others as fussy and old fashioned rather than pretty and current. The August magazine also has a divine sheath dress, a pleated skirt with buttons down the front, a pair of skinny jeans which I want to compare to my successful Marfy jeans as I think the comparison would be both interesting and instructive, and a rather cute cape jacket, which I wish I had the lifestyle to make and wear. I expect I will just look longingly at the cape and the sheath dress but the others are pretty practical propositions for trying to work out fit I think.

I hear you on neckline styles to wear with jackets! I always had the same problem. And yes, there are many polonecks in my wardrobe - it gets chilly up here!

Shirt collars are usually ok, but they get a bit dull. Have you tried drafting a collar with the jacket pattern in mind? Not design gifted myself, but I think some of your recent successful blouses/shirts would lend themselves to a neckline alteration.

re. tie necks - as long as they are all navy and cream and starchy, with some sheen or funky colours you should be ok. It's all about the attitude - and you're not short of that!

Thinking out loud - would it be possible to make a neck/collar with 'belt loops' to feed a scarf through? so that it could be a tie blouse or not? I mean make the self fabric tie, but it would be removable? I just saw something like that in a knitting pattern! (well it wasnt removable, but I thought when I looked at it that it was pretty, but might get annoying). Goin to look for it.

Cheers,
AJ

And the pattern includes (so it seems) the instructions to knit your own bi-tone driving gloves! Very retro.

btw... that site is where I buy most of my wool. Free delivery over £10 and if they aren't on holiday and the stuff is in stock will usually come next day for orders first thing in the morning! AND I've been in the Stirling shop (is just near where I bought my sewing machine from, Pemberton's). I miss trains :(

Cheers,

all brilliant ideas. Thank you. I've seen the 4 ply book in the flesh so to speak. I was very taken with it when I saw it at the wool shop in Leeds that I went to the other week. I really liked the pale cardigan and the blue sweater as well as the pink tie sweater. I have a vintage sweater pattern with a detachable tie actually. Its quite cute, but I'm not talking to my vintage patterns after my latest frogging incident.

I want to try Burda tops too though I think they expect a person to be a C cup from reviews I've read.

The Quilt is looking FAB!!

Loving the quilt,it looks so effective only using the 4 strips.

Now I'm even more impatient for my August Burda to arrive as I have been wanting to make a tie blouse for ages for the same reasons that you do. They are everywhere in the shops here and they are a classic so enjoy.

I have only just stared using the Burda patterns and so far not too bad, just hoping that the blouse starts at a 34 as I haven't tried scaling down a size yet.
