Chintz Block

OK.  This one I invented myself.  Its very simple....  and actually the result of a failure to plan correctly.

The entire quilt was inspired by the two fabrics shown here.  The square in the middle comes from a fabric that has the black/white print stripes, outlined by the spots on black shown, another pair of lines, then the mid scale chintzy floral on black, in a wide stripe.  then back to the spots/stripes/black and white print.  Its fabulous.  And in my head, there was this block that was the floral print square with the spots and print all mitred nicely and forming a frame around the flower print.  The ENTIRE quilt was designed around this block.  I was going to have one on the back and one on the front.

Except... the stripes weren't the same width all the way up....
and somehow the stripes just would NOT cooperate.
And I cut the fabric in a strip when I shouldn't have done... couldn't mitre it.
And I only had a half yard of it.... cos it was expensive..
And I'd just cut a huge lump of it off....
And that black and white print... its directional...
So making it into a frame just wasn't possible.
And the stripe wasn't the same width all the way round...
And it produced, an oblong not a square when you tried to set it the way I wanted it.

All of which means that the quilt block I did make is a pale imitation of the fabulousness that was originally planned... but its quite pretty anyway.  :)

Background is print yardage that matches one of the stripes in the print.  The square in the middle was cut out from the floral print with a quarter inch seam allowance and then the seam allowance pressed under.

Since it was misbehaving on a grand scale, I figured I'd fix it good... so I stuck it in place with Steam A Seam.

Then I cut the spotted section off the strip I'd cut earlier (from which the flower square came), with quarter inch seam allowances.  Turned them under and whip stitched the spotted strip to the edge of the flower square, then stitched the outer edge down.  Repeat on remaining sides.... So its a frame, but not the huge, baroque, stunningly fabulous, frame I had in my head.

I may cut the corners off the print background later and replace them with pink triangle corners, just to make it look like it has the same background scheme as the other blocks.  But for now it can stay as it is.

That is stunning fabric, I see what you mean. The whole project is beautiful, I see why you were nervous. This looks stunning, I can't imagine how it could look better, but I know how it is when you have an image in your head.
Pretty project!
