The square size was dictated by the fabric stripe width (three inch finished size, 3.5 inch cut size). Which gave me four squares by four squares for a 12 inch block.
I started with the large floral squares, then the chintz squares, but had some bits left still so made the four patch squares to use those up. Then I felt it needed an extra fabric to really make it work so I used the toning black/grey stripe with the tiny floral to provide a fourth square, which then meant I could more easily lay the block out in a way that repeated evenly and in a balanced way.
I'm quite pleased with how it came out. Though I wrote this post, then when I attached the photo I realised I had one of the corners on upside down so the small squares weren't in pattern. So I took the corner off, turned it around, and put it back on again, resulting in this, correct, square with all the large and small squares going diagonally as they should. The original quilt in the Lynne Edwards book has borders around all the blocks, some wider than others to bring all the blocks (which are different sizes) up to the same size to fit the sashing. I wasn't going to do this, but now I'm not so sure and may well use the backing fabric to make borders for all the blocks before the sashing goes on. It would draw the back and front together into a harmonious design whole I think, as well as making it logical to have the back brought over to the front to make the edging.. which is my preferred method as its the most hardwearing and the edges of quilts do tend to wear.
