Leggings and Jeans

Leggings! Tight jeans! Well, I know its generally the case that you should NOT wear something during a revival if you wore it first time around... but rules were made to be broken, and so with that in mind, I have purchased a leggings pattern and last night, I cut out a pair in black thick knit.
I can't sew them yet, my overlocker is very gravely ill (it was just very ill until Sunday when I took off the back to see if I could identify the problem... I found a broken tension disc but on replacing the back I discovered it was now on the critical list). I shall sew these at the weekend on my mum's overlocker, along with a knit top I cut out of the remains of the fabric length.
Tonight's project is to cut out a pair of jeans. I never got over my love of tightly fitted jeans and have made several attempts at recreating the fit I loved when I was a teenager, with varying success. This latest attempt is a Marfy (what a huge, enormous surprise I hear you cry).

I always need to take masses out of the width of patterns and this is no exception. However, the curved jeans pockets cause a real problem for me when I need to alter this way because I can't seem to take the side seams in on this kind of pocket without causing the pockets to distort and gape and usually end up with the lower end of the pocket curve hanging over the side seam looking nasty and the pocket curve bagging out like a pouch. Its usually a complete mess.
This time, I have split the whole front and back piece up the center and taken out four centimetres at the waist on each piece, tapering to two centimetres at the hem. This doesn't affect the side seams or the pockets at all and therefore I am hoping the pockets will lie nicely. It did bring the top of the pocket curve so far over that the curve is only two inches from the zipper at the waistline. I thought this would look wrong, but although my Escada RTW pair has a three and a half inch space between pocket and zipper, the three Next pairs all have the two inch space, and large pockets so it may be alright. The Next ones are about ten years newer than the Escada's so I guess they are the more sensible role model in these matters.

The altered jeans pattern does look very small. However, I've measured the tissue, and myself, super carefully and all the measurements say they should fit so we will see. The leggings pattern meanwhile, looks a little large. I have a back up plan in case of disaster though... the leggings will go in the bin, and the new Jalie stretch jeans pattern will be coming to live at my house. ( Actually, despite my pattern diet, the Jalie might have to come live with me anyway).

I've seen a few leggings under a mini dress looks which are quite nice. If they are too big you can always take them in a bit. The last pair of leggings I made was when I first got an overlocker - so about 15 years ago. I did them in the only knit I could find and they had black and white horizontal stripes - the kind that make you look fatter and if you look at them too long make you kind of dizzy. After that I swore off leggings. Bet yours will be lovely though.
