Thanks everyone for your comments. I was particularly intrigued by the idea of the crocheted trim, and will look into that, or at least a knitted trim since crochet isn't a skill I've mastered yet.
I came up with another plan for the trim as well, which is percolating in my head. I have a smallish piece of leather in the right colour. Its very soft and I had discounted it because the leather side is marked with some writing, right in the middle of the piece. However, the suede side is unmarked and I am considering making one inch strips of leather and binding the jacket with that. There are a number of issues to iron out first though and I need to run a few tests to see if its going to be possible to do, and indeed, see if I have enough leather to manage it. If that won't work, I do like the idea of a knitted trim of some kind. I also have some ribbon, which won't go around corners, but I am going to try add some ease stitching to the edges to see if I can get it to pull up neatly enough to fit the curves of the jacket.
Meanwhile, I have cut out a pair of trousers in navy wool/poly with white pin stripes. They will have slant pockets, which I had to draft all the pocket pieces for because the existing pattern pieces, which I am CERTAIN I created, were not in the pattern envelope and had evidently done a runner whilst my back was turned. Matching the pocket edges and the main underlayer was more challenging than it should have been due to a slight miscalculation of layout, which left only JUST enough fabric to get the pocket pieces out. I think I've got the stripes matching well enough. We shall see. The pattern is my standard trouser draft with slightly wide legs and I've added a fly front. Now, this may well turn out to give me nightmares since my front centre seam tips backwards, and I can't, therefore, keep the pin stripes straight on the fly. I've made it work in the past, but the distance between the stripes has an effect on how good, or bad, the fly looks when finished. I suspect there is some rule or method for making sure the pin stripes run straight, but I don't know what it is. Should it all go pear shaped, I shall comfort myself with the thought that no one should really be examining my fly that closely when the trousers are being worn, and most people wouldn't notice anything wrong if they did look closely.

Yes indeed no-one should be looking, and if they do I'm sure they won't notice the slanting of the stripes.
I could try investigating my local haby shop on your behalf? I like the idea of the leather, but the ribbon would work if you just mitre it with teeny weeny hand stitches.
Jenni this sounds so interesting. Do publish as you think it through and experiment. Please.
We are our worst critics with sewing, take some time to look at the high end fashion, it makes me take a lighter look at some of my sewing decisions.
