Jacket Trim experiments - Part Two - Crochet Trim

OK, here we have two crocheted trims made from bits of fancy yarns and threads I found in the cupboard. The first, gingery brown one, is a chenille but I thought it a little heavy looking for this particular jacket. I wouldn't discount a finer weight of chenille yarn, in the correct colour though.

The second trim, is made from three different strands of fancy yarn, held together. One strand is a dark, almost black purple shaded wool. It's hairy and reasonably thin in diameter. One strand is a sort of chainette, but a fine one, and space dyed. The third strand is a very shiny surfaced, silky looking multi-strand space dye. Its possibly some sort of rayon or silk mix and is very soft and splitty. My crochet hook wasn't really the right size to do these properly, which hasn't helped the tension on either sample, but particularly so on this trim as the three strands were difficult to pull through evenly; I kept losing one.

Both trims are the same stitch; a crochet chain. They look pretty different in the different yarns. Its really clever, especially considering its really only a sort of glorified cast on stitch. I can't actually crochet as such, but these chains are quite simple to do. Thanks to Sharon for suggesting this idea.

I went into York today, in search of the right ready made trim. I found nothing suitable so I went to the yarn shop, got two skeins of luxury yarn, and spent this afternoon crocheting a trim for the jacket. This took longer than anticipated due to the number of times I had to pull out my work because the tension had gone wrong. I have started to sew it onto the jacket and tthe six inches or so that I have got attached is looking OK so far. Hopefully I will be able to get some photos of the trim and jacket tomorrow. The yarns won't photograph under artificial light. Not even under the daylight bulb.

Wow, the trims look so different and can't wait to see your final version. So glad this is working for you. Can you loosen the crochet a bit to see the fabric underneath or do you want it to be close together. Now I'm wondering if I will change my trim for my Chanel Jacket or just keep this in mind for the next one :)
