After a gap of two or three years, I have made another quilt, albeit quite a small one.
Made from one jellyroll with a few extra strips added in, because I had them in stash. I've been keen to make a red, black and white quilt for some years.
As is often the case, the quilt layout I planned didn't quite work out but I am pleased with the revised layout which is similar to a previous, larger quilt I made a while ago.
The backing is a piece of red minky which was left over from the dressing gown mum made me for christmas, and the quilt's size was dictated by the minky scrap. However, it is a nice lap size quilt,, 40 inch by 60 inch. I made the binding for the edge from six jelly roll strips cut in half and sewn as a unit then cut into 3.5 inch strips then joined into longer strips. The strips were then ironed in half so my binding was double thickness. This protects the edges of the quilt . The edges can wear faster than the middle so doubling the quilt binding can increase quilt lifespan. Binding was sewn by machine with a half inch seam then hand sewn down on the other side. All quilting was done on machine and it has no filling... just a cotton front and minky fur back.
The quilt is very warm and goes well on the sofa and the minky fur is so tactile and warm that it is a joy to snuggle under it on a cool evening, much more so than a traditional cotton front/back with a wadding of cotton or wool. And it should launder and dry more easily too. A key consideration when you have a dog.

That does look cozy and so soft!
I've never had the patience or precision for quilting, that looks adorable.
